چکیده
I N 2002, A COMPLEMENTARY AND Alternative Medicine (CAM) Task Force was appointed by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (Academy) to develop CAM competencies for dietetics practitioners. CAM is defined as the use of medical products and practices that are not part of standard care. Education efforts in CAM were occurring across several national health professional associations, and the CAM Task Force acknowledged that interprofessional education and collaborations are necessary to ensure that registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) are competent health care providers. The group developed a 3-year road map of recommendations regarding CAM education at the preand post-professional levels, including broad CAM competencies for dietetics practice and competencies specific to dietary supplements. The CAM Task Force also proposed a continuing professional education (CPE) certificate program on CAM. Since the Task Force establishment and report, the terminology for CAM and the practice area have changed. Integrative medicine (IM) is the term used to describe the discipline concerned with using the combination of conventional allopathic medicine and alternative medicine to address the biological, psychological, social, and spiritual aspects of health and illness. Functional medicine considers the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms, and addresses the underlying causes of disease, using a systemsoriented approach and engages both patients and practitioners in a therapeutic partnership. Complementary therapies, alternative medicine, and holistic health are other terms that may be used to describe IM concepts and practices. It is likely that the terminology will continue to evolve. Thus, for simplicity, throughout this document and the survey described, IM is used to describe this practice area and related therapies (except when explicitly referencing documents that have used other terms). The National Institutes of Health National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health reports that use of IM has grown within care settings across the nation, including hospitals, hospices, and military health facilities. More than half of Americans report using a dietary supplement. The growing use of IM highlights the need to include IM, its concepts, and modalities in the practice and education of RDNs. There have been no phenomenologic research studies of RDNs’ contextual understandings of the IM practice area. The existing literature focuses on surveys of education, training, and curriculum, or knowledge, attitudes, and practices of RDNs regarding dietary supplements. Numerous surveys have found that RDNs generally have positive attitudes about the effectiveness of functional foods and dietary and herbal supplements, but concerns remain over the safety of these products, perhaps
